I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the National University of Singapore and an affiliate of J-PAL and CEPR.
My research focuses on how to improve government institutions and public policy. A lot of my research takes place in Bangladesh, where I have completed three large-scale field experiments. I also work on projects using non-experimental methods and data from other countries such as India, Pakistan, Vietnam, and Brazil, as well as cross-country data.
A central part of my current research agenda is aimed at reducing the harms of air pollution in South Asia, combining empirical evidence with a focus on practical, scalable policy solutions.
I mainly work on projects that, if successful, could have large positive welfare impacts. Some of my work is inspired by Effective Altruism (EA), and I teach a course on EA at NUS. You can learn more about EA and get lots of helpful advice about how to use your career to have a large positive impact at 80,000 hours.
